Defective Drugs: Zyprexa

Zyprexa, made by Eli Lilly, is commonly prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia. It is one of the most frequently prescribed drugs for this condition and the most frequently associated with serious side effects.

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, "of the millions of patients who took the drug over an eight-year period that ended in 2002, 288 are reported to have developed diabetes. Seventy-five of those people became severely ill, and 23 died. Some researchers see these statistics as significant because in some cases, life-threatening diabetes symptoms came on suddenly after patients began taking Zypreza and eased after they went off the drug."

In January 2004, Zyprexa was one of six antipsychotic drugs cited by four U.S. medical groups. They said Zyprexe carries the biggest risk for weight gain, diabetes and lipid disorders. The report was issued by the American Diabetes Association, the American Psychiatric Association, The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the North American Association for the Study of Obesity.
